Consumer Directed Services (CDS)
You are probably asking yourself what are Consumer Directed Services.
Consumer Directed Services are those services required by a person with a Disability, other than skilled nursing, which enable him or her to live independently in the community by hiring individuals to perform routine tasks of daily living. Typical tasks include getting dressed and undressed, grooming, bathing, bowel and bladder care, meal preparation, eating, and clean-up and household duties.
Qualification
Who qualifies for Consumer Directed Services?
To receive these services the consumer must be receiving Medicaid or
eligible for a nursing home, be at least 18 years old, have a disability, be able and willing to recruit, hire and manage attendants, and must be seeking or living in an independent living situation.
How Our CDS Program Works
DCAI's CDS programs are consumer controlled. Consumer control means that the person with
the disability receiving services is legally considered the employer of an attendant, and
is responsible for locating, hiring, and managing his/her own attendants. A friend or family member may be hired as an attendant, with the exception of a spouse. DCAI provides training for
CDS participants in 5 counties in Missouri, on hiring and managing attendants. This training is available through individual training or through peer consultation.
Your First Step To Receive CDS Services
If you meet the qualifications and are interested in setting up attendant services, please contact
Cindy Payne at DCAI 866 797-6080 or (573) 244-5402. A CDS Specialist
will ask you for some information including your Medicaid number. At
this point you will be assigned a CDS Specialist. They will contact you
for an appropriate time to set up an evaluation.
