DCAI Education Program
A Learning
Process Designed For You
Disabled Citizens Alliance for Independence, a community based Center for Independent Living, has been serving the needs of people with disabilities since October 1, 1980. DCAI services
ensure that all individuals, regardless of disability, have equal access to society.
DCAI provides education services in 5 counties in Mid and Southeast
Missouri. DCAI is a not-for-profit, tax exempt corporation
(501-c3).
The DCAI Education Program provides skills training to people with any type of disability, to enable them to remain in their own home and community, not an
institution. Any person
who has a disability and would like to further their education
qualifies. We work with all ages and all disabilities.
The DCAI Educational Department provides one on one tutoring in the consumers home, at school, or at the DCAI office. We work with consumers on the educational level that the consumer functions
at and in the academic area that the consumer requests. DCAI staff will also assist consumers in preparing
for their GED.
The DCAI Educational Department also advocates with parents at Individual Education Plan Meetings for children with disabilities to
ensure an appropriate education.
The DCAI Educational Department also provides an Ability Awareness Program to educate the community and further community awareness about people with disabilities. Program details include, but are not limited to:
A. Explaining equipment used by people with disabilities.
B. Disability etiquette.
C. Hands on training with area schools and communities, such as role-playing etc.
D. We also display visual, hearing and other adaptive equipment.
The Educational Department wants to expand our educational library so we will have updated materials to better serve our consumers needs. Also, we
are trying to improve our adult literacy program which is open to the community. This program would assist anyone in the community who wanted to achieve their GED, or just
sharpen their academic skills to improve their quality of life.
